challenge from the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre in Scotland, up to the
summit of Ben Nevis. At 1,344 metres this is the highest mountain in
the UK, and the weather on the day couldn't have been better! Just 2
hours and 40 minutes later the team had reached the observatory ruins
which mark the top, and could literally see for miles as the conditions
were so clear.
It wasn't long though before no-one could feel their fingertips
anymore, so (after a warming swig of Scottish whisky...!) they began
their descent back down to the bottom where the rest of the team and
the minibus waited to begin the long overnight drive to Wasdale Head in
the Lake District.
Thanks to a great, dedicated drive, the team arrived safely (along with
plenty of other minibuses transporting other groups of challengers!)
and began climbing Scafell Pike at 4:15am.
The torches wern't needed for too long though as the sun began to rise;
however, unlike Ben Nevis, the conditions here were very misty, so -
apart from a few eerie moments when the mist would clear for
about 30 seconds allowing a brief peek as to just how
much further they still had to go(!) - it was soon difficult to see anything
further ahead than about 25 metres.
They kept going though and, although the track
was relentlessly steep the whole way up, the summit was reached in
about 2 hours.
Once all were back to the minibus the car journey to Wales was started
a little later than scheduled, and
then (once in Wales) the team predictably hit a bit of traffic.
However, thanks again to a brilliant driving effort, they arrived at
Pen-y-Pass just 25 minutes behind schedule - so, although it'd be
close, they were still determined to complete the challenge in under 24
hours.
Continuing the theme of gradually decreasing weather, the wind, rain,
and generally horrendous conditions on Snowdon (along with an added
challenge of dodging a fell runners race at the summit!) tried
their hardest to batter the team down - but they were not defeated, and
the fastest completion clocked in at just 23 hours and 25 minutes!
Overall the whole challenge was really enjoyable and is an experience
none of the team are likely to forget anytime soon(!); but most
importantly they would like to thank everyone who sponsored them, and
are very proud to announce that they have raised £1308.10, all for Alfie!!!
Thanks again,
