We were overwhelmed by the response of all who took part. Our strategy for this year changed from previous year’s and our organisation decided to pay for each runner who took part in this year’s event and supply each runner a Friends of Alfie Johnson T-shirt. In past year’s we have run solely to raise money for Alfie, but this year we wanted to give something back and make a difference to other children’s lives, at The Phoenix Centre in Wordsley and Pens Meadow School, also in Wordsley.
On the 20th November, Alfie’s dad, Paul, accepted a cheque for £3500 at the Great Midlands Fun Run presentation in Sutton Coldfield , which was a fantastic amount.
He had this to say:
“This year has been another great year for Team Alfie. We registered in total, 51 runners for the event, which is a record for us. The money we raised has now being distributed to the chosen schools we wanted to help this year. The cheque for £3500 was an amazing amount raised by all these wonderful people who took part and those who sponsored each runner. After registration fees and costs were deducted from the total we had approximately £2,250 to share between the 3 organisations. Our organisation decided to donate their £750 share to the Pens Meadow School, where Alfie is a pupil, as they needed £20,000 for a new sensory room so all the pupils have a chance to experience this wonderful environment.
A cheque was also donated to The Phoenix Centre for £750 which they are hoping to use to buy equipment for their own sensory room and sensory garden.
I’d like to thank all those who got involved again this year and I hope to see many of them on the start line again next year”.
We would like to thank you all again for your support in this wonderful event. Registration for the 10th Anniversary Great Midlands Fun Run 2012 opens in February. If you would like to run for Team Alfie next year, please contact us via our website. Thank you.
